Periyar National Park
The park is a protected wildlife reserve for elephants and tigers. It is home to many endangered and endemic flora and fauna.

surrounded by the scenic Periyar Lake. This artificial lake, formed with the construction of a dam, functions as a source of water for wildlife. The
Periyar Tiger Reserve, one amongst the 27 tiger reserves in India, provides shelter to 265 species of birds, 12 species of amphibians, 49 species of mammals, 160 species of butterflies, 35 species of fishes and 36 species of reptiles. It is a haven for mammals like gaur, sambar, mouse deer, dholes (Indian wild dogs), mongoose and nilgiri langur; whereas the birdlife mainly includes cormorants, great malabar hornbill, kingfishers, darters and racket-tailed drongoes. You may see a python and sometimes a king cobra while exploring the reserve. With
many shades of nature and wildlife available here, tourists get one of the best lifetime experiences here.
Boat Cruises
The
wilderness of Periyar can be best seen through boat cruises on Periyar Lake. People flock the lake to get the glimpse of sambars, elephants and wild boars. Renting a boat is preferred in case you are touring with a group. The
chances of seeing wildlife increase in summer season as animals come often to the lake in search of water. Rose billed roller, ratchet-tailed durango, osprey and Ceylon frog-mouth are few rare species of birds often seen by tourists here. Apart from boat rides,

By Air: Cochin, nearest airport at 136 km
By Rail: Kottayam, nearest railway station at 114 km
By Road: State-run and private buses regularly ply from Kottayam, Munnar, Ernakulam, Thiruvananthapuram and Cochin to Periyar.
Preferable time to go: October to February is the best time to visit when the weather remains pleasant in Periyar. However, to get the best view of wildlife, summer season from March to June is recommended when animals especially elephants come to the lake to drink water.
